Painting the Portrait in Oils

In this class we will learn how to paint a portrait in oils from a reference photo.  Starting with the initial sketch we will learn how to break down the face into patterns and shapes in order to see that areas of light and dark that create form. In this first step we will see how we can paint with pencil using the same principals that we will then bring in with paint.

The underpainting is a scaffold upon which we will lay our colors. The underpainting creates a visual structure and another layer from which we can get to know the subject. We will learn how to create an underpainting using one color to create darks and lights as our foundation.

In the final stages we will be adding paint. We will learn how to mix colors ahead of time to use for our flesh tones. The world of color is fascinating and there is so much to explore. We will discuss how to apply color and to see them for what they are and how to create a dynamic, life-like feeling.  A list of all materials will be sent upon registration.

For beginners or for those who want to improve their wheel throwing and/or handbuilding skills.  An overview of the entire ceramic process will be introduced, including glazing and firing techniques. Registration for this class begins Tuesday, June 2 at 10:00am.

This course will cover basic handbuilding and wheel throwing skills. Let’s discover what method is most suited to create the work that best pleases your aesthetic sensibility. Both wheel throwing and handbuilding demonstrations will be given. There will be one-on-one attention for those of you pursuing a more advanced agenda. This will be an engaging experience for beginning and beyond artists looking to work in ceramics. Registration for this class begins Tuesday, June 2 at 10:00am. Please note that registration for all adult ceramic classes will be in person or by phone only. Priority will be given to in-person registrations. RoCA will be taking numbers for in-person registration at 9:00am with registration beginning at 10:00am.

Advanced Claywork

For serious wheel throwing and handbuilding students who wish to continue to improve their skills in a structured and supportive atmosphere.  Both group and individual instruction are emphasized. This course will include one alternative firing to be determined by the group. All-inclusive critiques of both work in progress and finished work will be scheduled during class time periodically. Students will formulate glaze texts as a part of the class.  Please bring a notebook to the first class.
