Painting the Portrait in Oils

Lauren Rudolph $235 / senior $225

In this class we will learn how to paint a portrait in oils from a reference photo.  Starting with the initial sketch we will learn how to break down the face into patterns and shapes in order to see that areas of light and dark that create form. In this first step we will see how we can paint with pencil using the same principals that we will then bring in with paint.

The underpainting is a scaffold upon which we will lay our colors. The underpainting creates a visual structure and another layer from which we can get to know the subject. We will learn how to create an underpainting using one color to create darks and lights as our foundation.

In the final stages we will be adding paint. We will learn how to mix colors ahead of time to use for our flesh tones. The world of color is fascinating and there is so much to explore. We will discuss how to apply color and to see them for what they are and how to create a dynamic, life-like feeling.  A list of all materials will be sent upon registration.

Cyanotype Workshop: Printing With the Sun

Poramit Thantapalit      $65

Learn how to use the cyanotype process to produce distinctive blue images by using sunlight. During this workshop, participants will learn how to mix and apply chemistry to paper and print unique cyanotypes using a sunlight exposure. This workshop is open to adults at all levels. Most materials will be provided, but participants should bring the following supplies: at least two watercolor or printmaking papers (size 8"x10" or smaller), pencil, tape, scissor/cutter and latex gloves. No experience needed!

A workshop focusing on the basics of wheel throwing.  Various aspects of clay properties, glazing and design are explored. For beginning and intermediate students.  Some handbuilding techniques are also introduced.  Materials and firing fees included.

Advanced Claywork

For serious wheel throwing and handbuilding students who wish to continue to improve their skills in a structured and supportive atmosphere.  Both group and individual instruction are emphasized. This course will include one alternative firing to be determined by the group. All-inclusive critiques of both work in progress and finished work will be scheduled during class time periodically. Students will formulate glaze texts as a part of the class.  Please bring a notebook to the first class.

Explore the process of painting still life and landscape paintings! Learn the basics of toning the canvas, drawing a composition, mixing colors, and various ways of applying paint. This course will cover basic handbuilding and wheel throwing skills.  Let’s discover what method is most suited to create the work that best pleases your aesthetic sensibility.  Both wheel throwing and handbuilding demonstrations will be given. There will be one-on-one attention for those of you pursuing a more advanced agenda. This will be an engaging experience for beginniing and beyond artists looking to work in ceramics.

Creative Clay (all levels)

This class focuses on developing individual styles by offering a diverse range of handbuilding techniques. Students will expand on basic skills by learning how to use unusual forms and altering methods in both non-functional and functional work. The instructor will provide alternative approaches to glazing, which includes understanding underglazes and their uses. Students will be encouraged to explore colorful and painterly surfaces and experiment with different clay bodies. All levels will develop at their own pace in a supportive environment.
