    Burnout: An Exploration of Line, Texture, and the Artifact Object

    Working with In Form exhibiting artist Max Seinfeld, students will explore alternative approaches to working with clay through the burn out process of soaking organic matter in casting slip and firing it in a gas. This workshop will focus on dipping and soaking material with a high absorbency rate such as rope, yarn, lace, etc. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and inspirational material; Through demonstration and discussion we will discover how the firing of these fragile ceramic objects can then lead to their reconstruction during the post firing process. Leaving this workshop, each participant will have a number of petrified artifacts showcasing the breadth of texture created through this innovative technique....

    As part of the Contemporary Sculptural Ceramics at Rockland Art Center, exhibiting artist Kirsten Lyon will be teaching a special master class.  In this one day workshop students will use the potters’ wheel and hand building techniques to create various components that can then be assembled to create a whole. The instructor will demonstrate creating closed forms and blow pots, as well as creating multiple parts by throwing off the hump. As part of this is a one day workshop, students will have the opportunity to create parts that can be assembled later using the techniques learned during this session...
