"THE BEST SHOW IN TOWN" ...the Wall Street Journal Will Friedwald
THE YOUNG LIONS OF GYPSY JAZZ, stars of The Semi-Annual Django Reinhardt NY Festival produced by Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta, will take your breath away with their brilliant virtuosity, fast and furious rhythm, as well as their romantic interpretations of new and traditional songs. This is HOT JAZZ at its best.
THE YOUNG LIONS OF GYPSY JAZZ carry on the legacy of gypsy guitarist DJANGO REINHARDT. Much like Django, they adhere to the traditional gypsy style with its vibrant rhythm and swing, but also express their own personality through new interpretations and original songs. The group remains true to the Hot Jazz, Romantic style that has exploded across the US.
Since their debut in 2000 at the Django Birdland Festival, The Young Lions of Gypsy Jazz have toured the country from The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to Disney Hall in Los Angeles. Now the group comes to our very own Catherine Konner Sculpture Park to share their music with the Lower Hudson Valley Region.
About the Band:
SAMSON SCHMITT, Guitar, France: Son of legendary gypsy artist Dorado Schmitt, Samson is a rising star throughout Europe. Samson comes from the Strasbourg region of France, where Manouche gypsy culture has a strong influence on music, especially jazz. He learned guitar under his father’s instruction and spent much of his childhood backstage at the Birdland. Throughout the 1990s, Samson played with his father and brothers in the Dorado Schmitt Quintet.
LUDOVIC BEIER, Accordion and Accordina, France: Famous for his fusion of Django Jazz with Brazilian style, Ludovic is a familiar and favorite face on the Hot Jazz scene.
PIERRE BLANCHARD, Violin, France: Pierre was awarded Le Violon de Michel Warlop award in 1984, making him among the most distinguished violinists in France.
DOUDOU CUILLERIER, Rhythm Guitar, France: New comer Doudou has brought a vibrant energy to the stage with his scat-singing and playful sound. Doudou is famous for his band Doudou Swing and his children’s entertainment show Django Mr. & Mrs. Swing.
BRIAN TORFF, Bass, Chicago: Brian is currently the Music Program Director at Fairfield University and has been the Musical Director at the Django Reinhardt New York Festival.
Feel free to bring a picnic dinner and watch the sunset at RoCA’s beautiful Catherine Konner Sculpture Park while listening to the greatest Gypsy Jazz band around.
