Public Sculpture Commission Announcement for Site Specific Exterior Sculpture
Request for Qualifications

Project Budget: $100,000.
Deadline for Submission: January 15, 2008
Finalists notification: January 30, 2008

The Art in Public Places Committee (AIPP) of Rockland County, NY announces the following competition:

A commission to create a site-specific exterior sculpture to be located adjacent to the Rockland County Department of Social Services (DSS). The site is located in Pomona, New York on the grounds of the Robert L. Yeager Health Complex.

DSS is housed in a former hospital building (Building L) on the Health Center Campus. It provides services including temporary assistance, housing, Medicaid, employment, childcare subsidies, foster care and adoption, preventive services for adolescents and also volunteer services. The mission of DSS is "to accurately and efficiently provide benefits and services to the people of Rockland County in a manner that promotes self-sufficiency, protects the vulnerable, and is recognized as being fair and responsive".

The goal of the artwork is to engage visitors and staff in a meaningful way. The front yard of the building has several sites that would be visible to many visitors and passersby. While AIPP challenges the artists to suggest their own vision for the work, the intent is to engage the public in a positive way capturing the spirit of the place and the importance of the programs that go on in this special community.

Interested artists may submit a resume and six examples of recent work (either slides or a CD) and a corresponding, numbered slide script including: Artists Name, Title of Work, Dimensions, Year Completed and Cost, if the work was a commission.

Up to five finalists will be selected from those responding. Finalists will be required to submit a site-specific proposal and a visual representation to the AIPP committee, and will receive an honorarium.

Send submissions by January 15, 2008 to:
Julianne Ramos
AIPP Administrator
C/O Rockland Center for the Arts
27 South Greenbush Rd.
West Nyack, NY 10994

Submissions will be returned only if you provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
