The
Public Art Program of Rockland County, New York C. Scott Vanderhoef,
County Executive
In
1986 the Rockland County Legislature passed a law which states that
one percent of the bonded capital cost of county government construction
projects will be allocated for art. The Percent for Art Law was
the first of its kind in the state outside of New York City.
"...
a public art program is one of the finest contributions a government
can make to its citizens since it provides the community with a
unique identity, civic pride and thought provoking cultural landmarks,
as well as a sense of community cohesion..." (Local Law
No. 6 of 1986 County of Rockland, State of NY)
The
Art in Public Places Committee
A core committee of eleven volunteers from the community runs the
program and oversees the commission, selection and placement of
the art. The members are experts in the fields of art, art history,
architecture and design. They are appointed by the county executive
and confirmed by the county legislature.
