The Rockland Center for the Arts will host the exhibit 9x9x3 by the Textile Study Group of New York October 29 - Dec 16, 2001. The Textile Study Group of New York organized this exhibit in collaboration with the American Craft Museum in NYC. The artwork combines textiles, fibers and mixed media presented in a 9x9x3 inch box frame. This traveling exhibit has had successful runs at The New York State Museum in Albany, The American Craft Museum in New York City and the Cummings Art Center in Connecticut. Janet Kolpos, Senior Editor of Art In America, has curated the 52-piece exhibit. She writes, "The pleasure of an exhibition based on a format rather than a theme is that it does not restrict an artist's thinking." Each artist brings his or her own expertise in some aspect of fiber or mixed media using such things as fabrics, threads, bamboo, paper, and wire, to create a vivid collection all within the 9x9x3 inch "frame". The exhibit has been divided into two categories: About the World and About the Work. In the first group, many pieces are still lifes; the second group can be described as symbolic and geometric. The Opening Day Reception is Sunday, October 28 1pm-4pm and will feature Textile Study Group member Sandra Golbert who will demonstrate the art of painting on silk 3pm-4pm |
